In our COACH'S
SPOTLIGHT section, meet someone who's making a difference - Coach John Stephens and the Ware County GATORS in Waycross, Ga. The Gators were the 2007 State AAAA Runners-up with a final score of 14-20 against the Northside Warner Robins Eagles.
Adept at devising motivational cues, Stephens has used many sources for instilling the desire to win. “One year we were playing some giants, so I went out and collected small rocks. Then I reminded the team of David and Goliath, and how David slew the giant with just a small pebble. I gave each player a rock to keep in his pocket; some even put them in their practice uniforms. We won, and afterwards it was fun to hear the kids all talking about slaying giants,” he remembers.
